President Bola Tinubu has said Nigerians are free to criticise or even insult him without facing reprisals, framing tolerance of dissent as central to his administration’s commitment to democratic and press freedoms.

Tinubu made the comments on Thursday, September 3, at the centenary celebration of the Daily Times of Nigeria Limited in Abuja, where he was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Akume quoted the President as saying: “Let us admit that under this government, you can insult and attack the president and still go to bed without midnight troubles. This philosophy lies at the heart of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The President said his administration recognises the media’s critical role in shaping the country’s direction and acknowledged that many of Nigeria’s current problems are the result of structural weaknesses that have built up over decades. He argued that addressing these deep-rooted issues requires “difficult decisions” and the courage to confront past policy choices while charting a new path forward.
Tinubu described his government’s reforms as more than isolated policy tweaks, saying they are designed to change Nigeria’s long-term economic trajectory. He listed the objectives as building a stronger fiscal base, boosting productivity, strengthening institutions, attracting investment, improving infrastructure, and expanding opportunities for young Nigerians. The ultimate goal, he said, is to position Nigeria to “compete more meaningfully and purposefully in the global economy.”
