Former Cross River State governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate Donald Duke said President Bola Tinubu remains a formidable politician but has performed poorly in governance.

Speaking Monday on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Duke assessed Tinubu’s standing ahead of the 2027 presidential election and said the president is not stronger now than he was in 2023. “I don’t think so. I think his governance has exposed the weakness of the contraption,” Duke said. “I don’t think he has the sympathies he had in 2023.”

Duke blamed the shift in public sentiment on Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions, saying many citizens are disillusioned. “Things have gone harder for people; a lot of people are disillusioned by his style of governance. Hope has turned into despair,” he said.

While praising Tinubu’s political skills, Duke drew a line between politics and governance: “Give it to him, he is a formidable politician. My issue with him is governance, not politics. He is weak on governance, from what we have seen over the last three years.”

Duke warned that another term for Tinubu could deepen the country’s problems as living conditions deteriorate. He also said the opposition must unite and prepare for possible challenges on election day if it hopes to defeat the incumbent.
