SOKOTO — Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to reinstate the petroleum subsidy if elected in the 2027 general elections, saying his administration would first focus on rooting out corruption across the country.

Obi made the pledge on Monday during a town hall meeting organized for the Obi/Kwankwaso presidential ticket in Sokoto, identifying corruption as one of Nigeria’s most pressing challenges and promising to confront it across every sector of government if elected.

“People are talking about subsidy but what is all about it is corruption. By removing the corruption, I assure you that we will bring back subsidy,” he said. “The problem of Nigeria is corruption, as such, if elected, we will stop all forms of corruption in every sector of the country.”
He called on Nigerians to use the 2027 elections to vote for NDC candidates across the board, describing the task of solving the country’s problems as a shared responsibility. He said the party remains committed to what he called a “politics of care and service to Nigerians.”
The former Anambra State governor also voiced concern over the country’s economic situation, saying that if elected, he would channel national resources toward strengthening security, education and other key sectors. “Education is our number one priority after unity and security,” he said, adding that he would work to connect all state capitals via railway lines to boost economic activity and development.
Kwankwaso highlights security concerns in North-West
Also speaking at the event, NDC vice-presidential candidate Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso said the visit was aimed at engaging directly with Sokoto residents and securing their support ahead of 2027. The former Kano State governor noted that the delegation had earlier paid a visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, who he said prayed for the success of the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket and extended his goodwill.
Kwankwaso pointed to the security challenges facing various parts of the country, with the North-West particularly hard-hit by banditry and kidnapping. “We are, therefore, committed to mitigating all these challenges and make Nigeria better,” he said.
Earlier at the event, the NDC’s governorship candidate for Sokoto State, Dr Shamsudeen Haido, pledged to deliver good governance if elected in 2027. The state party chairman, Alhaji Bello Yabo, said the town hall gave residents a direct opportunity to hear from Obi and Kwankwaso about their vision and plans for the country.
