Two nurses have been taken into police custody following the deaths of two young sisters at the General Hospital in Zuru, Kebbi State, in what is being investigated as a case of medical negligence.
The victims, aged six and three, died on March 18 under circumstances believed to be linked to a wrong injection administered at the facility. Investigations are ongoing to establish the precise cause of the girls’ deaths.
The Kebbi State Government has since constituted a nine-member panel to probe the incident, headed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed. The committee has begun sitting in Zuru as it works to uncover the full facts surrounding the tragedy.
In a show of support for the bereaved family, the state government presented a donation of ₦10 million at a ceremony held at the Emir’s Palace in Zuru. Delivering remarks at the event, Ahmed made clear that the gesture was one of solidarity rather than compensation.
“This donation is to assist the family in coping with the trauma of this tragic loss. It is not, and cannot be, a replacement for the lives lost,” he said.
He added that while no sum of money could undo the pain of such a loss, the government wanted the family to know they were not facing their grief alone. “We hope this gesture will show that the family is not alone and has not been neglected,” he said.
