Obi and Kwankwaso Defect to NDC After ADC Uncertainty

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and NNPP’s 2023 presidential flagbearer Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have formally aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ending weeks of speculation about their next political moves following turbulence within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The two politicians sealed their decision at the residence of Senator Seriake Dickson, the NDC’s National Leader, where they held consultations with senior party figures. They arrived early evening and engaged in discussions with Dickson and other key stakeholders before the meeting moved behind closed doors, concluding about an hour and a half later.

Following the talks, Kwankwaso called on his supporters and political associates to throw their weight behind the NDC and deepen their engagement with the party. Obi, for his part, urged members to resolve internal disputes through dialogue rather than litigation — a signal that he intends to help stabilise the party’s internal dynamics from the outset.

The dual defection is widely regarded as a significant boost for the NDC. Both figures command loyal followings that cut across regional and demographic lines — Obi drawing heavily from youth-driven civic movements in the South-East and beyond, while Kwankwaso brings a formidable grassroots base in the North-West. Their arrival is expected to considerably raise the party’s national profile ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
