A 24-year-old Michigan man has been handed a minimum 30-year prison sentence after fatally striking his best friend with an SUV on the same day he got married.
James Shirah visibly struggled to contain his emotions in court as he maintained that he never intended to take the life of Terry Taylor, 29, a close friend who had stood beside him as a groomsman just hours earlier. The deadly incident unfolded in Flint on August 30, 2024, in the aftermath of Shirah’s wedding to Savanah Collier, as post-reception celebrations carried on at a private residence.
Taylor, who leaves behind four children and a fiancée, was killed when Shirah’s vehicle struck him with enough force to send him airborne during a heated, alcohol-fuelled altercation that night. The precise cause of the dispute between the two men was never established.
Prosecutors argued that Shirah had initially walked away from the confrontation, giving him time to reconsider his actions, before deliberately returning and driving into Taylor. The defense maintained throughout that the collision was accidental rather than a calculated act.
When given the opportunity to address the court, Shirah said: “The only thing I can do for the rest of my life is express my apology and remorse. I will forever be sorry.”
Presiding Judge Khary Hanible offered a pointed response: “Mr. Shirah, I believe that you are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer.”
