Makinde Slams Federal Government Over Delayed State Police Debate, Says Amotekun Filled the Gap

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has accused the Federal Government of wasting Nigerians’ time over the prolonged debate on state police, saying the issue should have been resolved long ago.

Speaking on Friday at a joint mega rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APM in Ibadan, Makinde said South-West governors had earlier pushed for state police but later launched Amotekun as a stop-gap after the proposal failed at the federal level.

“We wanted state police. It was because we couldn’t get the state police that we established Amotekun as a stop-gap,” he said, adding, “They should stop wasting Nigerians’ time.”

He said the South-West had to rely on its own initiative by working with state Houses of Assembly to legalise Amotekun across the region. Makinde also claimed Lagos did not join the arrangement because President Bola Tinubu, then a dominant political figure in the state, opposed it.

“The only state that didn’t create Amotekun is Lagos State, and we know it is because their boss didn’t want Amotekun,” he said.

Makinde maintained that with political will, state police could be set up quickly, arguing that insecurity demands urgent decentralised action.
