Florida Couple Charged with Killing Newborn, Staging Scene as Sleep Death

Crystal Garcia, 21, and Anfernee Watts, 25, face aggravated manslaughter charges after allegedly killing their 3-week-old son in August 2025 and staging his death to appear as if he passed away sleeping.

Arrested April 8, 2026, in Hollywood, Florida, the couple gave investigators conflicting statements to hide the truth, per an arrest affidavit. Garcia admitted touching the unresponsive infant’s eye but delayed calling 911 or alerting others, including her mother, to avoid stress.

The March autopsy ruled suffocation as the cause. Prosecutors allege Garcia tightly wrapped the baby in a blanket, strapped him into a car seat with a pacifier secured in his mouth, placed the seat in a bathtub, shut the bathroom door, and blared music to mask cries. Upon finding him dead, she and Watts staged the scene instead of seeking immediate help.

Evidence included bleach-cleaned surfaces, discarded baby items, blood-spotted changing pads, and surveillance of Garcia with cleaning supplies just before her 911 call. Watts claimed a bleach spill accident; his mother later said Garcia confessed to lying and admitted smothering the baby in voicemails.

Both face additional charges of child neglect causing great bodily harm, evidence tampering, failure to report the death, and giving false statements. They’re held in Broward County Jail awaiting trial.
