UNILAG Lecturers Down Tools Over Slashed Salaries

University of Lagos lecturers have made good on their threat, with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the institution commencing an indefinite strike over the non-payment of full salaries for January and February 2026.

The industrial action, which took effect on Wednesday, was triggered by what the union described as deliberate and unjustified deductions from members’ monthly pay over the two-month period. Lecturers on the Akoka Campus were denied their Economic Allowance Adjustment (EAA), while their counterparts at the Idi-Araba Campus were deprived of both EAA and CATA payments.

The union’s leadership, comprising Chairperson Idou Kehinde and Secretary Adesina Arikawe, had issued a communique following an emergency congress earlier in the week, giving the university management until Wednesday to resolve the matter. With no resolution forthcoming by March 9, members proceeded with the withdrawal of services as resolved.

ASUU described the university administration’s conduct as a unilateral violation of its members’ entitlements, noting that staff at other federal universities of comparable status did not face similar deductions. The union has vowed to keep the strike in force until every affected member receives full salary payments for both months.

The development raises fresh concerns about labour relations at one of Nigeria’s foremost universities, and places pressure on the management of the University of Lagos to act swiftly to avert a prolonged disruption to academic activities.  read more
