A teenager aged 17 has been taken into custody in connection with the killing of a 16-year-old girl, whose remains were found in a bushy area in Pharare Village, Limpopo, South Africa. The victim’s body was discovered on the evening of Friday, May 1, 2026.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba noted that responding officers were unprepared for what they encountered at the scene. Authorities had been alerted after reports emerged of a deceased female in the bush, prompting an immediate response.

On arrival, officers were met by the 17-year-old suspect himself, who led them to a nearby wooded area where the victim’s naked and decapitated body was found. The boy initially offered a different account of events, claiming that he and the girl had been ambushed by four masked individuals — two men and two women — traveling in a blue VW Polo and armed with firearms.

According to his version of events, the pair were forced into the vehicle at gunpoint and driven to a remote bushy location, where he claimed to have sustained stab wounds to his arm and abdomen before escaping. A further search of the area led investigators to the victim’s severed head, which had been buried close to her body.

The suspect was hospitalized following the incident, and it was there that members of the Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit, the Mopani Tracking Team, and detectives from Maake arrested him on Saturday after intensive investigations positively linked him to the crime. A weapon believed to have been used in the killing was also recovered.

Ledwaba confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, and that a probation officer will carry out an assessment under the Child Protection Act to determine how the suspect’s court appearance will be handled.
