Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Nigeria has taken action to correct the record over a fake investment video that has been making the rounds online in her name, warning people not to fall for the scam.
The senator emphasised that she was never involved in nor aware of any investment platform being pushed under her identity, dismissing the video as completely fake.
She advised Nigerians to ignore the information and stay away from any payment requests associated with her name or image.
In West Africa, these deepfake or imitation scams have become more widespread, with con artists regularly using the likenesses of well-known public figures to give false investment schemes that target gullible people legitimacy.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan called on relevant authorities to investigate the origin of the video and take appropriate action against those responsible, while reaffirming that she would never solicit funds or promote investment opportunities through unofficial channels.
