IGP Orders Lagos Officers in Viral Harassment Video to Abuja for Disciplinary Action

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has summoned the police officers featured in a widely circulated stop-and-search video to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they are expected to face disciplinary proceedings.

The directive was made public by Force Media Officer CSP Aliyu Giwa via his official X account on Sunday. According to Giwa, the officers — who were stationed in the Satellite Town area of Lagos at the time of the incident — have been ordered to appear on Wednesday to answer for their conduct.

The summons comes on the heels of significant public backlash triggered by the video, which surfaced on social media Saturday after being posted by X user @ChuksEricE. In the footage, officers are seen pulling over a vehicle, instructing its occupants to exit, and leading at least one individual away from the roadside to conduct a search — conduct that many viewers condemned as intimidatory and unprofessional.

In his statement, Giwa framed the IGP’s swift response as a demonstration of the Force’s commitment to internal accountability, calling on all officers to maintain professionalism, exercise restraint, and honour the rights of citizens in the course of their duties.

“The Nigeria Police Force values the concerns of the public, which continue to reinforce our commitment to accountability and professional standards,” he said.

Giwa also reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to discipline and the preservation of its integrity, assuring Nigerians that appropriate consequences would follow once the disciplinary process has run its course.
