Nigeria’s House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the ongoing drop in farm produce prices, citing threats to farmers’ incomes, food security, and nutrition nationwide.
Key Concerns Raised
Lawmaker Bamidele Salam’s motion highlighted sharp declines in staples like cassava, rice, and yam, causing massive losses for farmers burdened by input costs, loans, and poor infrastructure. Issues include absent off-take systems, weak storage, limited processing, and market access gaps, risking farm exits, lower output, and import reliance.
Mandated Actions
The House directed the Agriculture Ministry to craft urgent remedies: price supports, off-take deals, expanded grain reserves, and agro-zones to cut post-harvest waste. The House Committee on Agricultural Production must report causes within two weeks.
