Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has dissociated himself from those who want Iyorchia Ayu to be ousted as the PDP’s national chairman.
In a statement released by Nathaniel Ikyur, his chief press secretary, Ortom made his view on the matter plain, stating that he had faith in Ayu’s capacity to lead the party to victory in the general election of next year.
The governor made the comment in response to claims made by Jemgbagh Development Association, Abuja, that he was attempting to assassinate Ayu, a fellow citizen of Benue.
The governor of Rivers and Ortom’s buddy, Nyesom Wike, heads a faction of the PDP that the governor of Benue is a member of. Ortom’s stance contrasts with Wike’s.
Wike’s camp has been adamant in their demand for Ayu’s resignation as a condition for supporting Atiku in the presidential election ever since the fallout followed the emergence of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential nominee of the party ahead of Wike in May.
In his statement, Ayu claimed that he and other well-known Benue residents toiled nonstop to make sure that Ayu was chosen “as the national chairman of our great party even against all obstacles.”
Therefore, the governor could not turn around and attempt to have him removed from office, he argued.
“Governor Ortom vouched for the integrity and capability of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to lead and rebuild the PDP to victory and rescue Nigeria from the misrule of the APC maladministration,” the statement said. Due to this, Ayu was chosen as the PDP’s national chairman at the party’s convention and was re-elected without opposition by the party’s northern caucus.
Where was the Jemgbagh Development Association when Governor Ortom rallied the party’s leaders to support Dr. Ayu’s appointment as national chairman? What did they contribute to the project that they are now trying to blackmail the governor with by taking a clannish stance?
“This emergency Jemgbagh Development Association in Abuja, which has never been heard of before, is now launching a campaign of defamation against Governor Ortom, who has toiled tirelessly for the people of Benue State.
