According to a report filed at Malaika Police Station, Danston Isundwa Mmbehi was at home with his wife, Mary Mmbone Khalechi, when a woman identified as Fransisca Makhokha arrived carrying a young child. Danston then introduced Fransisca to Mary as his newly married second wife and disclosed that the child — a 16-month-old — was theirs together.
Witnesses say Mary initially appeared calm. She reportedly welcomed both Fransisca and the child into the home before slipping away to the kitchen, where she appeared to be preparing tea.
Moments later, investigators say she returned carrying a sufuria of boiling water and poured its contents over Danston — who was holding the toddler against his chest at the time. The scalding water struck all three, triggering screams and panic inside the home.
Neighbours who rushed to the scene helped the injured family members seek emergency care. Danston and the child were transported to Kakamega General Hospital. While the father is receiving treatment, the toddler remains hospitalised in serious condition, drawing deep concern from relatives and the wider community.
Residents described the attack as heartbreaking, particularly given the age and innocence of the child caught in the crossfire of a domestic crisis.
Mary allegedly fled the homestead before police arrived. Her whereabouts remain unknown, and a manhunt is currently underway. Authorities are appealing to members of the public with relevant information to come forward and assist in locating the suspect.
Investigations are ongoing.
