The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has denied media reports suggesting that he carried a placard against former President Goodluck Jonathan during Jonathan’s administration.

Adeboye addressed the claim during the RCCG’s November Thanksgiving service on Sunday, saying the placard was carried during a church prayer walk in 2020, five years after Jonathan left office.

The cleric admitted that he carried a placard but insisted it was part of a prayer walk, not a protest against the former president.

“True, I carried a placard. I can’t deny that. It was important. It was a prayer walk. We wanted to pray,” he said.

He explained that churches had been directed to organise prayer walks near their premises, and that he complied with the directive.

Adeboye said the timing of the prayer walk contradicted the report’s claim that he acted against Jonathan while he was president.

“But I carried the placard in 2020. Jonathan ceased to be president in 2015. I carried the placard five years in the second term of Buhari,” he said.

He accused the journalist of distorting the facts and criticised the failure to investigate the incident before publishing the report.

The RCCG leader recalled studying journalism in the 1960s and said he was taught the importance of investigative journalism and verifying information before publication.

“Things don’t appear as they may seem. Investigate, if you have a story, before you take it to the press,” Adeboye said.
