Bail Revoked After Sowore Failed to Appear in Court
The remand followed the revocation of bail the court earlier granted him. Trial Justice Mohammed Umar, in a ruling on June 16, not only revoked the bail but also issued a warrant of arrest against the defendant.
The arrest order came after Sowore, who was scheduled to open his defence to the charge, failed to appear before the court for the continuation of his trial.
Sowore had earlier opted to represent himself before the court after his legal team withdrew from the case.
Dismissal of Bias Motion
Meanwhile, in a ruling on Monday, Justice Umar dismissed a motion that sought to disqualify him from conducting the trial over alleged bias.
Background on Cybercrime Charges
The DSS filed the cybercrime charge against Sowore for calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” in a social media post. In the amended charge filed on December 5, 2025, Sowore was slapped with two count charges bothering on defamation of Tinubu as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, contrary to Section 24(1)(b) and 24(2)(a), (b), and (c) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention and Amendment) Act, 2024.
The charges are punishable with a fine of a minimum of ₦15 million or five years imprisonment.
