Police response
Command spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe said police operatives moved quickly to the scene after receiving a distress report and restored order. They took the injured man to hospital, where he is receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. Giwa has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to identify and arrest those responsible.
Separate clash at the airport
Ndukwe also referred to a separate incident earlier that day. At about 11:30 a.m., joint police and military operatives dispersed suspected NDC members who had gathered in a disorderly manner at the entrance to Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
Preliminary findings, he said, indicate that airport authorities had barred the party members from entering the airport in large numbers to receive their governorship candidate. A misunderstanding reportedly broke out among the members and turned into a fight, which prompted the joint security team to step in.
The police have not linked the two incidents, and no arrests have been announced so far.
