A public lavatory on Savage Street in Ebute Metta has been closed by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LASWAMO) for reportedly dumping raw sewage into a public sewer.
Following inspectors’ confirmation of the infraction, officials closed the facility on Wednesday.
The enforcement action was launched Thursday by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, who claimed that the operators purposefully injected raw wastewater into a community drainage line. Strong smells and obvious sewage flow along the street were apparently complaints from the locals.
Wahab stated that such infractions endanger groundwater, public hygiene, and environmental safety, characterising the act as a public nuisance with major health consequences.
He warned that offenders would be prosecuted and urged residents and business owners to adopt responsible wastewater disposal practices.
“Environmental compliance is a shared civic duty,” Wahab said, adding that the government would intensify surveillance across high-risk neighbourhoods.
