Peter Obi Joins ADC Ahead of 2027 Presidential Election

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has officially joined the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC). The former Anambra State governor announced his defection on Wednesday, December 31, during an event in Enugu.

Explaining his decision, Obi said the move was part of a broader effort to “transform and rescue Nigeria” ahead of the 2027 general election. “We are ending this year with the hope that 2026 will mark the beginning of our rescue journey,” he said, adding that his team would “resist election rigging by every lawful means in 2027.”

Obi urged opposition figures to unite under the ADC platform, calling on political leaders to rally behind the leadership of former Senate President David Mark. According to him, a united opposition front is crucial to restoring good governance and rebuilding national trust.

In attendance at the event were David Mark, who serves as the National Chairman of the ADC; former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; former governors from the South-East; and several other prominent political figures.

Also present were former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; Senators Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji, Sam Egwu, and Enyinnya Abaribe; as well as Chief Onyema Ugochukwu and other members of the National Assembly.
