Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has declared that President Bola Tinubu has effectively already lost his bid for re-election in 2027, citing his efforts to recruit more state governors into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as evidence of weakening political standing.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Yesufu argued that a president confident of popular support would not need to shore up his position by assembling governors under his party’s umbrella. She drew a historical parallel, noting that the Peoples Democratic Party once controlled a similar number of governorship seats, yet still suffered electoral defeat when public sentiment turned against them.

She also pointed to the low public enthusiasm during recent APC registration exercises, contrasting it with what she described as the notable energy surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Beyond the electoral outlook, Yesufu painted a bleak picture of the country’s current state, describing Nigeria as being at a virtual standstill. She expressed deep concern over deteriorating economic conditions and worsening insecurity, pointing to incidents of abductions and killings, as well as what she characterized as increasingly brazen displays by terrorist groups. In her view, governance has broken down to the point where little of substance is functioning across the country.
