Peter Obi, a former presidential contender, has condemned the alleged tear gassing of Nigerians peacefully calling for free, fair, and legitimate elections.

Obi voiced his concerns about what he called the repression of persons exercising their democratic rights in a message published on his Facebook page on Tuesday. The fact that people who used to portray themselves as champions of democracy are now behaving in ways that threaten it, he said, is concerning.

According to him, such actions risk eroding public trust and weakening the foundations of good governance.

Obi urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and united in protecting the country’s democratic process. He reiterated his call for greater transparency in elections, particularly through the mandatory real-time electronic transmission of results directly from polling units to prevent manipulation and restore confidence in the system.

He concluded by encouraging citizens to remain hopeful and committed to building a nation grounded in justice, accountability and credible elections, reaffirming his belief that “a New Nigeria is Possible.”
