This is not the first time Nwoko has publicly supported polygamy. In a 2022 interview, he claimed that men in Southern Nigeria who reject polygamy contribute to social issues such as prostitution because “many women are left unmarried.”
Despite the backlash, Nwoko insists that his position is grounded in cultural tradition and religious history.
“Polygamy is not a sin. Even in the Old Testament, it was practiced openly,” he said.
As the controversy continues to trend online, both supporters and critics await further statements from Regina Daniels or her management team regarding the senator’s latest claims.
The senator’s comments have ignited a flurry of reactions across social media.
While some Nigerians applauded his defense of traditional marriage systems, others criticized his remarks as “tone-deaf” and “patriarchal.”
Social analyst Chioma Eke noted that Nwoko’s remarks “reflect a clash between modern monogamous values and traditional African marital systems,” adding that “his attempt to justify polygamy using metaphors of balance may reinforce outdated gender hierarchies.”
I am not a violent person. I love and respect my wives and children,” he stated, adding that Daniels’ recent behavior stemmed from alleged drug and alcohol abuse rather than domestic violence.
He alleged that the actress had assaulted staff members and destroyed property during a recent altercation — claims her representatives have not publicly addressed as of press time.
