The Lagos State Government has launched a full investigation into the death of a socialite known as Elena Jessica, who reportedly died following a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) cosmetic procedure at a clinic in the state.
The probe, led by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), follows social media reports alleging complications during or shortly after the surgery.
HEFAMAA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Abiola Idowu, confirmed the investigation in a statement on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Although the clinic is registered with the agency, registration does not exempt it from scrutiny when patient safety is at risk.
Aesthetic and cosmetic procedures in Lagos must adhere to strict standards, including facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection control, patient consent, anesthetic safety, and emergency protocols.
HEFAMAA is conducting a comprehensive review to assess compliance, verify medical personnel credentials, and evaluate care provided before, during, and after the procedure. The public is urged to avoid spreading unverified information that could undermine the investigation.
Residents seeking cosmetic services are advised to use only accredited facilities and qualified practitioners.
