The recent flooding that has wreaked havoc in certain areas of Nigeria has prompted the Australiann government to issue a travel advisory to its people.
On Wednesday, the embassy posted a list of over 20 states urging Australians to stay away from, including Abuja, the capital of the country.
The government has advised its citizens to think twice before traveling to the nation with the most population in Africa due to terrorism, abduction, and other criminal activities.
However, it cautioned its citizens that if their journeys to Nigeria are significant, they should do a detailed analysis of the routes to take and seek competent security assistance.
It said, “Severe flooding has resulted in substantial deaths and considerable infrastructure damage. There might be a disruption in crucial services. Pay attention to local authorities’ recommendations and news reports for updates.
“In all of Nigeria, there is a significant potential for terrorism, abduction, criminality, and civil instability. If, in spite of our warning, you decide to go inside Nigeria, be sure to plan your itinerary and get expert security advice and assistance before you leave.
Due to the high risk of terrorist attack and abduction, the unstable security situation, the potential for violent civil unrest, and the high rates of violent crime in Nigeria, you should reevaluate your need to visit the country as a whole, including the capital Abuja and its surroundings.
Adamawa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Cross Rivers, Delta, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara States should not be visited.
