A Zimbabwean preacher and his son were given life sentences for allegedly stealing a man’s hands.

After accusing a young man of stealing batteries and other items from their South African church, a Zimbabwean pastor and his son were sentenced to life in jail for the vicious attack and amputation of the guy’s hands.

The Emalahleni Regional Court in Mpumalanga found pastor Solomon Mahlangu and his son Enock Mahlangu guilty of attempted murder and kidnapping, while the daughter-in-law, Poppy Lethnes Mhlanga, was found guilty of kidnapping, according to a statement released by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Tuesday, November 26, 2025.

On 27 March 2024, the victim was taking a shortcut through the church premises on Kroomdraai Road towards Extension 16 in Vosman when he was confronted by Enock and the other accused.
Solomon and Enock assaulted the victim, dragged him from a vehicle, and brutally chopped off his hands with a panga. The accused abandoned him at the scene while he bled and pleaded for help.
A passerby found the victim and rushed him to receive urgent medical attention. Following police investigations, the accused were arrested and later released on bail under strict conditions.
All three of the defendants chose to remain silent and entered not guilty pleas throughout the trial.

Prosecutor Francois Brandt on behalf of the State presented convincing and reliable evidence, including the victim’s in-depth account of the brutal assault.

A photo album depicting the location of the severed hands was also accepted by the court. Despite the accused’s testimony, the court dismissed their accounts as unlikely because they were only denials.

The victim’s testimony was acknowledged as accurate and trustworthy. In order to make it clear that violent crimes will not be accepted, prosecutor Brandt advocated for the imposition of severe punishments.

The court took into account each accused person’s involvement in the offenses while determining their sentence.

Solomon Mahlangu and Enock Mahlangu were each sentenced to life imprisonment for attempted murder and three years’ imprisonment for kidnapping, and Poppy Lethnes Mhlanga was sentenced to three years’ direct imprisonment for kidnapping. All three accused were declared unfit to possess firearms.
“The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes these sentences and remains unwavering in its commitment to vigorously pursuing perpetrators of violent crimes, sending a clear and firm message to would-be offenders,” the statement added.
