UK bans 100 occupations from foreign recruitment in bid to cut migration

In an effort to reduce net migration, the UK government has proposed broad new limitations on hiring overseas, prohibiting foreign workers from filling over 100 positions.

In a statement released on X Saturday morning, the Home Office revealed the policy change, stating that it was intended to reshape the visa system and create possibilities for British workers.

“Getting the basics right is essential to reducing net migration.

More opportunities for British workers are now available as more than 100 occupations are no longer eligible for foreign hiring. Now, a more equitable, skills-based system is emerging,” the Home Office noted.

This development marks the latest move by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who took office on July 5, 2024, following Labour’s landslide victory, replacing Rishi Sunak.

Critics, however, have warned the policy could worsen labour shortages in sectors such as health and social care.

The Home Office has not yet published the full list of restricted occupations, PUNCH Online however reports
