Veteran Nollywood actor Dele Odule has weighed in on how public disrespect should be handled, advising against accepting a private apology for an offense that was committed publicly.

In a post shared on his Instagram page, Odule argued that anyone who embarrasses or disrespects another person in public should be held to the same standard when making amends meaning any apology should also happen publicly. “Never accept a private apology for public disrespect, never ever,” he wrote.

According to the actor, apologizing privately after a public act of disrespect doesn’t genuinely resolve the situation; instead, he said, it mainly serves to ease the conscience of the person apologizing rather than truly repairing the harm done. He added that respect, once broken in public, should be restored in that same public space not quietly settled behind closed doors.
