President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on 50 Nigerians he described as key figures in the country’s pro-democracy struggle.

He made the announcement during his 2026 Democracy Day address on Friday, June 12, as Nigeria marked the anniversary of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election. Tinubu said the honourees, including journalists, civil rights leaders and military officers, endured persecution, exile, detention and other sacrifices to help secure democracy for the country.

The president said the formal presentation of the awards would take place in the coming days.
