Tuggar resigns as Foreign Minister

Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet to seek the Bauchi State governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

The Ministry confirmed the move on Monday via spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa. Vanguard reports that Tuggar submitted his resignation letter to the President shortly after noon.

The resignation follows a March directive from the office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. It requires all political appointees—including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, assistants, and heads of federal agencies—seeking elective office to resign by March 31, 2026.

The order aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, to avoid conflicts of interest ahead of the 2027 polls.
