A Magistrate Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has remanded a 30-year-old man, Oforbuike Damian, in a correctional centre after he was arraigned for the alleged m#rder of his mother, Onyema.
The incident took place on March 19, 2026, in Ukawu, Onicha Local Government Area, where Damian allegedly st@bbed his mother to de@th following a heated dispute. Reports indicate the argument stemmed from the mother’s refusal to perform a spiritual bath for him and her reluctance to set up a barbing salon for his brother.
After the killing, the suspect fled the community but was tracked down by local villagers and handed over to the police. He was subsequently arraigned before the court by the Police Directorate of Legal Services, headed by Chinagorom Eze.
When the matter was called, Damian who appeared without legal representation admitted to the offence. The charge sheet indicated that he caused his mother’s de@th by stabbing her with a knife, an act punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ebonyi State.
Presiding Magistrate Agnma Chinedu Agnma ordered his remand and referred the case to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), citing the Magistrate Court’s lack of jurisdiction to try capital offences. The case has been adjourned to April 9, 2026, for further proceedings.
