Police nab suspected NSCDC officer, 2 others over alleged robbery

Three suspects, including a man believed to be a serving officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been arrested by the Anambra State Police Command in connection with alleged armed robbery in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, announced the development in a statement released to journalists in Awka on Sunday, March 22.

According to Ikenga, operatives from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu acted on credible intelligence on March 21 at approximately 1:46 p.m., raiding a suspected criminal hideout in Ogidi where the three men were apprehended.

The arrested suspects were identified as Francis Anene, 46; Emmanuel Obi, 29; and Okoye Chinonso, 35. A suspected fake security agency identity card was found among the items recovered during the operation, alongside two locally made Beretta pistols and four rounds of live 9mm ammunition.

Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects belong to a criminal syndicate allegedly responsible for armed robbery, kidnapping, and the terrorising of residents across Ogidi and surrounding communities. Authorities are also probing their possible involvement in the murder of the late President-General of Ogidi.

In a separate development, police officers attached to the Ozubulu Division recovered a suspected stolen white petrol tanker in the early hours of March 17, found abandoned along the Onitsha/Owerri Expressway. The vehicle had no registration number and its key was left in the ignition. The command said it has launched an investigation to identify the owner and determine the circumstances of its abandonment.

Both cases remain under active investigation.
