Ifeanyi Eze, a Nigerian man living in the United States, has sparked conversation online after sharing his shock at the steep cost of childbirth in America.
The US-based father took to Facebook to express his disbelief upon receiving a $23,000 hospital bill following the delivery of his baby born to him and his American wife during a two-day stay that he described as a routine procedure.
While his health insurance absorbed the bulk of the charges, Ifeanyi used the moment to shine a light on the broader reality of healthcare costs in the country.
“Hospital sent us a bill for having our baby with them $23k for a straightforward procedure and a two-day stay,” he wrote.
He also pushed back against the notion that medical professionals are the primary beneficiaries of America’s expensive healthcare system, arguing that it is ultimately patients and insurers who foot the bill.
Expressing relief that his coverage stepped in, he quipped that without it, he would have been in tears right alongside his newborn.
