Nigerian photographer and brand influencer Orowole Kolapoz, widely known as Kola Onifoto, has died at the age of 32 following a lone motorcycle accident on the outskirts of Lagos — a tragic end to what was meant to be a milestone adventure.
Kola succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Monday, March 2, 2026, after spending hours in critical care. He had been rushed to the emergency unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps at 7UP, Ojota, before being transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Idi-Araba, where friends and followers held an anxious social media vigil praying for his survival.
The crash occurred on Sunday, March 1 — the very day he embarked on what he had described as his first solo motorcycle trip outside Lagos, with Akure as his destination. Just hours before the accident, he had taken to Facebook in what would become his final post, celebrating the boldness of long-distance bikers across Africa and the world.
A Dream Realized Too Briefly
The timing of the tragedy has made it all the more heartbreaking. Only in January, Kola had joyfully announced that he had fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning and riding a motorcycle, posting a proud photo beside his new bike on X. In that same post, he wrote what now reads as an eerie, almost prophetic prayer — “I won’t fall and die on this – Amen!”
That the fatal accident occurred on only his first solo long-distance ride has led many close to him to speculate about what may have gone wrong. Friends and fellow bikers online have pointed to several possible factors: the unfamiliar terrain of roads beyond Lagos, the physical and mental demands of a solo long-haul ride on a relatively new biker, potential fatigue from riding through the afternoon heat, or poorly maintained road surfaces along the Lagos-Akure corridor — a stretch notorious among bikers for its challenging conditions.
Some observers have also noted that enthusiasm and confidence following a newly achieved dream can sometimes lead riders to take on challenges before fully building the experience needed for them. Without a riding companion or support team, any mechanical fault, sudden obstacle, or momentary lapse in concentration on an open highway could prove fatal — particularly for someone still in the early stages of long-distance riding.
Outpouring of Grief
News of his passing triggered an immediate wave of tributes across social media, with friends, colleagues and followers remembering Kola as passionate, adventurous and deeply inspiring. Many noted the bitter irony of a man whose zest for life and hunger for new experiences ultimately led him into harm’s way.
The exact cause of the crash has not yet been officially confirmed, and investigations are ongoing.
