The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, has said he is better equipped to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges if given the opportunity to lead.
Speaking during an interactive session with Nigerians on X Space yesterday, Obi asserted that none of the aspirants eyeing the 2027 presidency has the hands-on business experience he possesses. According to him, unlike others, he successfully built a small business from scratch and grew it into a large corporation.
“I know how to turn Nigeria around,” he said. “I built my business from the ground up and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting President. I’m a finance person; I understand how to manage funds.”
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that reviving the economy would also strengthen national security, arguing that both issues are closely connected. He vowed that under his leadership, small businesses and manufacturers would thrive, as they are the backbone of economic growth in developed nations.
Addressing recent speculations, Obi denied claims that he planned to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition as a running mate. “I will be on the ballot in 2027,” he declared.
Obi also urged his supporters, known as “Obidients,” to remain peaceful and avoid trading insults with political opponents, even when provoked. His appeal came in response to a question from a supporter in Akwa Ibom State who lamented verbal attacks from some ADC coalition members.
While reiterating his long-standing support for the coalition, Obi encouraged open-mindedness and collaboration among its members. “None of us can predict tomorrow,” he said. “We must work together with the right people to manage our affairs. We can’t solve Nigeria’s problems through bullying but through cooperation and competence.”
Unfazed by criticisms, Obi stressed that personal attacks do not discourage him. “If calling me stupid or an idiot will solve Nigeria’s problems, I’m ready to go to court and change my name to ‘Obi Stupid,’” he quipped.
He concluded by urging his supporters to respond to falsehoods with facts and civility. “Pray for those who abuse us,” he said. “Engage our opponents in healthy debates and help them understand our position.”
