Rwanda: President Kagame concerned about drug abuse among youth; mentions former colleague who was addicted to alcohol

Kagame

President Kagame urged the youth to stay away from drugs, as they continue to affect them and the country as a whole, even to the point of causing some to lose their lives.

The Head of State delivered this message at the conclusion of the 17th General Assembly of the RPF – Inkotanyi Alliance held on December 19, 2025 in Rusororo at the Intare Arena.

He said that people should be characterized by healthy values, saying that when values are good, they build up, when they are bad, they destroy.

He asked the youth what they get out of drinking alcohol, asking them what is in alcohol that makes them believe that their lives are being ruined.

He said, “Youth, what do you get out of this? What’s in it? People constantly remind you that it could cost you your life. After all, when you see a young man, 38, 45 years old, they tell you that it’s over, and they tell you things that would otherwise kill old people like us.”

He said that currently, the majority of people who go abroad for treatment, paid for by the government, are people with preventable diseases, saying, “Six out of ten people are found to have unexplained, preventable causes.”

He said, “I know these doctors here know [….] In the RPF, where we should be investing, are we looking for drunkards?[…] I have seen people talking on the phone for a long time, we are the first […] I don’t mind you saying that, just let them charge for it […] but when it comes to being listed, when I see us among the first to drink a lot of alcohol, I know that people’s lives are also like that. Let’s try to avoid that
